Yun Jin: Project

Why I chose this costume:

Yun Jin was the first cosplay I started working on, however I often consider Hilda my first cosplay as I finished her first. I had just started this cosplay when Yun Jin released in game, so resources were a bit tough near the start. However, I was able to find a pattern from Indigo Patterns to use. I have a bit of a history of sewing when I was a kid so a lot of things clicked into place for me after a bit of practice, and I was able to figure out my machine pretty quickly.

Yun Jin was such an interesting and unique character to me so I was excited to cosplay her!

How I made this costume:

I started by reviewing the pattern and instructions, taking time to learn the basic skills. I definitely overestimated my skills at times and made mistakes that set me back, but this project was a huge learning experience for me and taught me much of what I know today.

I ordered the â€‹accessory kit in gold cold cast resin from Dangerous Ladies, shaded and attached the pieces with superglue. I also got the staff print from Dangerous Ladies and finished and assembled that myself. For the skirt tabs, I used snaps so the skirt panels would have mobility- they did fall off from time to time though so I would use stronger ones if I were to do this again.

I made the pom-poms, tassels and cording myself, and added ribbon and elastic detailing on the sleeves, bonnet and skirt by hand as well.

For the wig, I used a base of Nyx in Purple Black Fusion from Epic Cosplay, and a pack of Anime Blue wefts from Epic Cosplay that I hand stitched in for the braids.

Fun fact, the steel boning I used in the corselet is my great grandma's, and the little hairclip I added in the back is from a Japanese friend of mine!

Final Thoughts:

Although I didn't win an award for this cosplay, I learned so much and got tons of wonderful feedback to improve! I had a lot of fun competing and set in stone that I definitely wanted to keep doing this.
