Spirit Blossom Syndra
League of Legends
Completed: November 2022

Best Journeyman Craftsmanship at Youmacon 2022
Why I chose this costume:
I heard my friends discussing the "mental/art block" that lies between moving from Novice to Journeyman, and I didn't understand how bad it was until I experienced it first hand. I struggled for months to find a project that was "good enough". But, when it was leaked that Spirit Blossom was having a re-release with new designs, I just knew this was it. I was expecting to like Soraka or maybe Evelynn the most, but the second I saw Syndra I fell in love!

I spent hours directly after her release analyzing the design, breaking down possible fabric choices, and more- going above and beyond to be sure this was my best work yet.
How I made this costume:
Since I was starting this cosplay day 1 of release, there were near 0 resources. I also wanted to demonstrate my skill, so I patterned the whole thing from scratch.

I spent a few days researching fabric, and I was able to find everything I needed at a local fabric store for pretty cheap.

Most of the patterning I used trial and error, making 2-3 drafts for every piece on the cosplay. I did a lot of foam edges, heat transfer vinyl, and cording for the detailing.

The belt piece print file was designed by Tokkitan and printed and finished by me. Horns were made out of foam, using a pattern from Fat Unicorn Cosplay in "Evil Witch". I made the jewelry with beads from Joann, with elastic cording.

I had to get innovative on the belt because of the mechanics of it. I ended up using a heavy duty wire base, with a mix of beads for the gold spacers and modified Christmas ornaments for the orbs. I drilled holes through it for the wire to slot through and glued them shut. I stuffed the orbs with iridescent tulle in white and blue for the foggy effect.

I wanted to go all-out with this cosplay, so I made the shoes as well. I used sheets of wood and carved out my general foot shape, then sanded the edges for safety and drilled holes for the straps.
Final Thoughts:
I never expected to win an award as my first Journeyman, this is definitely a landmark cosplay for me. I got so much love on this costume and it was so fun!

With bigger builds like this, things are bound to break. After a 12+ hour con day, I ended with a broken belt and broken shoes, which isn't great but could have been worse. I definitely want to fix things up and wear her again one day!
